Un grupo de científicos estadounidenses ha descubierto una vasta reserva de agua, fruto del deshielo, por debajo de la capa de hielo de Groenlandia, la cual permanece en estado líquido durante todo el año, incluso en invierno.
Los investigadores de la Universidad de Utah, EE.UU., aseguraron que el agua podría ayudar a revelar pistas sobre el aumento del nivel del mar, informa el centro educativo en su portal oficial.
Estiman que el enorme manto acuífero, ubicado en el sureste de Groenlandia, contiene alrededor de 140.000 millones de toneladas de agua -suficiente para elevar el nivel del mar en 0,4 milímetros- pero aún no está claro si está fluyendo hacia el océano.
El deshielo en la isla ha aumentado rápidamente en los últimos diez años, sin embargo los científicos aún no saben dónde va a parar toda esa agua.
Anteriormente, investigadores británicos revelaron que hallaron la existencia de dos lagos debajo de la capa de hielo en el noroeste de Groenlandia, descubrimiento que podría ayudar a predecir los efectos del cambio climático.
